Join Jill Kennedy in this introduction to the masterclass series, you’ll be guided through getting set up and started on your silk painting journey and discover new techniques including the water technique and alcohol technique, plus working with salt and sugar.

For Session 2 you will take a deep-dive into the gutta serti technique. With Jill’s expert tips you’ll learn the tips and tricks of working with gutta resist on silk to create where you can apply a variety of colours. Jill is a master of gutta demonstration on silk and she provides a lot of gutta silk painting techniques including blending colours, work with water for flow and using coloured gutta for design and effect.

Now you have learned the basic techniques, Jill explores more of her favourite silk painting techniques in a variety of demonstrations. Jill is an advanced batik artist and her work in batik wax resist on silk is a wonderful addition to this workshop, where she will put into practice working with a brush and a Kystka stylus.

Looking for something more? In the penultimate session of the series, Jill moves on to taking colour out (discharge) of the silk, using anti-spread on the silk to create a painterly canvas, and thickened silk dyes with stamps, brushes and other effects.

Once you have created a body of work with all of the demonstrations, Jill concludes the workshop with steam fixing your silks — both on the stove and using commercially available appliances.

- Silk (crepe de chine, pongee, smooth or textured, and coloured and/or patterned weave)

Jill Kennedy has over 25 years experience as a textile artist. She is the author of five silk and fabric painting books and has also produced Kits for beginners in Silk Painting and Batik. Jill has written many articles for Art and Craft journals and runs workshops and day courses too.
Jill lives in Marlow, England, where she continues to create silk painted wearables and textiles and enjoys being a granny.
