About

Join Wendy Dolan, teacher, artist and author and learn how to create a small embroidered picture using freehand machine embroidery. Using a basic domestic sewing machine you will be shown how to ‘draw’ with your thread.

You will start by working on a practise piece, and then you will create a small landscape picture which can be mounted in a frame or as a greetings card. Basic materials and equipment will be required for this exciting technique, an embroidery hoop, some fabric and coloured machine thread, but no experience is necessary. Why not have a go; it really is easier than you may think if you follow Wendy’s guidance.

Techniques you will learn:

  • Setting your machine for freehand stitching.
  • Learn how to ‘draw’ with your thread.
  • Apply pieces of fabric to enhance your design.
Materials & Preparation

Materials

  • A basic sewing machine, with an extension table if you have one.
  • A darning foot / freehand embroidery foot for your machine.
  • Embroidery hoop - 7 or 8 inch.
  • Small embroidery scissors.
  • Calico or firm cotton fabric - 2 pieces 10” x 10”. One piece could be coloured fabric.
  • Machine thread. This can be polyester (Drima, Guterman etc.) or rayon machine embroidery thread (Madeira, Guterman, Aurifil etc.) We would suggest medium and dark green, brown/grey for tree trunks, red or colour of choice for flowers.
  • Wooden kebab skewer or cocktail stick.
  • Optional: small pieces of chiffon or organza to suggest flowers in the distance.

Preparation

  • Remove your regular sewing foot and replace with a freehand embroidery/darning foot.
  • Lower the feed dog/teeth on your machine. Check your manual. You may have a darning plate to cover the teeth instead of lowering them. If not cover with masking tape!
  • Thread your machine top and bottom with medium green thread. I would recommend a 90/14 needle.
  • You may wish to paint your background calico fabric, so, in the centre of one piece, mark an outline shape 3 x 5 inches with a fabric marker or pencil. You can paint this in shades of green ⅔ for landscape and perhaps ⅓ blue for the sky. You can use any paints you have or water-soluble crayons. Don’t make it too dark. You may prefer to just work on the calico or use a light-coloured fabric for your background.
  • Stretch your second piece of calico in the embroidery hoop.

I loved being at home and enjoying this event. Although being at the Knitting and Stitching show is fantastic, this was great to enjoy an aspect of it.

  2. Nicola J (verified owner )

Wendy is an excellent tutor, her detailed, step-by-step, instruction along with useful hints and tips has got me started with machine embroidery after (far too many) years of wanting to try it out.

  3. Christina K (verified owner )

Very easy to follow the demo and the pace was just right for me (a beginner)! This is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time and Wendy made it look so easy.

  4. Colin M (verified owner )

Really well explained workshop for beginners

  5. Andrew S (verified owner )

I love being able to see someone else who has a common interest, almost as if I was there at the show taking part. Hopefully it will refresh my interest to carry on with more textile art and see me through the next weeks.

  6. Sam B (verified owner )

Wendy is always excellent in her ability to teach many skills clearly in a short space of time. As a relative beginner she enables me to take part and produce a reasonable piece of art. Being able to watch it again is also very useful.

  7. Martin W (verified owner )

Wendy had me engrossed from the beginning, not just showing us how to machine embroider but lots of tips as well.

  8. Caroline S (verified owner )

Wendy’s class was extremely well done. She explained everything very clearly and the filming was excellently done – very easy to follow. Also the content was great – perfect for an hour & a half and it’s great we get to watch again.

  9. Lynn I (verified owner )

A good 90 minutes of excellent tuition with the added value of being able to rerun the course

  10. Margaret H (verified owner )

It was nearly as good as being in Harrogate. The session was extremely well prepared and presented. Wonderful work – Wendy’s not mine!

  11. Mary T (verified owner )

I loved being able to join Wendy and hearing from someone else with a common interest to me, it was almost as if I was there at The Knitting and Stitching show taking part. Hopefully it will refresh my interest to carry on with more textile art and see me through the next weeks.

  12. Gina B (verified owner )

I could never manage to do machine embroidery before – the way Wendy explained it was excellent and I could actually get it working!!!. Unfortunately my machine wouldn’t allow me to lower my feed dog – so brilliant to have the recording so I can try again later with duct tape over it
