Sessions Overview
Session 1
Understanding and Prepping your Cloth

In this introductory session, allow Claire Benn to develop your understanding of the process of working with natural fibres, the burn test, the relevance of fibre weight and weave structure as well as how to correctly scour to prepare the cloth for dyeing.

Session 2
Understanding the Ingredients

It’s incredibly important to understand the ingredients your working within this process. You’ll be taught the key umbrella terms that are used in this craft alongside gaining knowledge of the variables within Fibre Reactive Dyes and those ingredients related to it.

Session 3
Bucket Basics pt.1

Be introduced to salt-based vat dyeing in the third session of the series. Compare the differences between high water immersion (for a smooth even colour) and low water immersion, which can produce a smooth finish or a little texture. Claire will also discuss dyeing for texture and how to look at the results.

Session 4
Bucket Basics, pt.2

Having been introduced to the world of bucket dyeing in Session 3, you’ll build upon those skills to learn about tray dyeing (the basics and looking at the results), dyeing a serial gradation and looking at those results as well as dyeing in a washing machine and the results of this as well as over-dyeing. The session will be rounded off with Claire’s expertise on batching and rinsing.

Session 5
Benchwork Basics – Dyes as Paints

To begin, Claire will teach you the importance of noting your key ingredients. She’ll then guide you through the process of her soda soaking recipe and how to store soda-soaked cloth. You’ll then turn to consider chemical water and print paste, how to make liquid dyes and thickened dyes, as well as how to alter the value and consistency of dye pains. Claire will conclude this session by taking you through the process cycle for dyes as paints.

Session 6
Surface Design using Dye Paints, pt.1

In this practical session you will set up your station and set to work – creating a black on white surface design project.

Session 7

Join Claire in this session as she considers further experimental methods to surface design using dye paints. You’ll be introduced to the designs that can be made when working with dry brush, cola pens and montana markers, as well as working wet on wet, batching your cloth and rinsing, troubleshooting & back staining.

Session 9
The Basics of Colour Mixing, pt. 1

In this penultimate session, Claire will take you through the basics of colour mixing. She will guide you to make tartan, to use the colour star to mix secondary colours and to mix complex colours.
